Blog 54 Robert And I Make A Plan( Continue from 53)

[My new job and how Robert and I decided to make the other people comfortable when we were around them.)

I felt I deserved a raise and was declined. I did announce that I would not be staying. But, before I continue that, I want to tell you what I consider one of my funniest days at Presbyterian. Every Wednesday, they served chicken fried steak with gravy. It was easily one of the best meals. But, it was always a man-eat-man fight to get a plate. There was a line that went to 6 spots. But, the food server circled backwards where the sixth line was actually the first. Also, people would come in and go straight to the server and would STEAL the chicken fried steak well ahead of the people in the line.

I calmly waited in line one until I was at the front. I walked to the front of the server and a nurse pushed her way in front of me. It had been twenty minutes already. My manners had left me. When the next set of chicken fried steaks came around and the nurse leaned in to get the first one, I loudly said, ” If you touch that steak plate, I PROMISE that I will stab my fork into your hand.” She pulled back for a moment but then reached in again. I said, “I am serious. I WILL stab your hand with my fork.” “There is a line behind you that have been patiently waiting, while you people keep jumping the line.” So, I say again, ” I will stab you with my fork!”

The nurse stepped out of my way, and let me get my plate. But, I deliberately blocked her from getting any plate, and let them pass to the people waiting. After they were all taken from the line, I moved. The nurse had to wait about fifteen minutes for more to come around. I thoroughly enjoyed my steak!

(Finding a new job)

After leaving Presbyterian Hospital, I took a job at a diagnostic imaging center for one year and a half. Robert stayed at Presbyterian doing his job there. The doctor that was over the imaging center was, also, the chief Radiologist at Saint Paul Hospital. He was in the middle of transferring studies from the center to him at Saint Paul via computer. This is significant, because  this was the beginning of transferring studies from one place to another and NOW they can be sent to a doctor’s personal computer, or also, the studies may be transferred to doctors everywhere and especially, the Radiologist reading the study.

I had time and knowledge enough to use the first computer able to do these things. It was cool helping to make it perfect. Though, I was not the entrepreneur, I was honored to be a big help in creating the original study transfer by computer. However, the clinic was very slow and I got bored easily, and also, wanted more money. I found in the news paper that a travel technologist made very good money. I was selected to go on a six week-two month job outside of Dallas that I would make a lot of money. I took the job and fell in love with the travel.

(a special Christmas gesture that I will never do again)

While at the imaging center, I accepted the position of sponsoring a family for Christmas. The list had everything from food, clothes, coats, and Christmas presents. I knew the people at the clinic had the money to get these things. With the help of a large donation from the doctors, we bought EVERYTHING that was on that list. I was soooooo proud.

The day came to deliver the things to the family. Robert came in a white Camero, and it was filled solid. We went to the apartment complex where the mother was waiting. They were not in a good part of town. The apartments were set in a backwards “U” position. When we came to the drive, there were about four guys there and they stopped us. They asked if we were there for drugs and we quickly said we were looking for the apartment number we were given. It was in the middle complex and you had to park at the other end and walk through the inside part.

We got the first bags of things and began carrying them to the apartment and a woman came out and signaled us to hurry. When we got inside and told her we had much more, she said to hurry and be careful!(HUH) When we got to our car, it was beginning to be surrounded by people. Bit by bit we quickly brought bags after bags to her. When we got to the food, a little girl yelled to us, “Hey, Mister! Did you bring us some food? We are hungry too!!!!” Robert and I got everything as fast as we could. We got in our car asking people to move so we could leave!

The lady said she wanted the things in her apartment before others knew what is was we brought. The little girl asked us to bring them back some food, too. When we got out of the complex and to a safe part of the area, I pulled over and began bawling. The money we spent for that one family could have fed probably the entire complex. I was suppose to be happy, but I felt ashamed and embarrassed. Robert got me back to work and I went in with red eyes. They asked me how it went, and I said I would never do that again! I began bawling again, went to my room and no one came in.

At the end of the day, I was able to explained what happened and everyone was feeling what I was feeling. It ws a sad day, and I begged God to make something good out of the situation. I remember it as if it happened yesterday. What an eye opener for me. (This story changed my life that you will read how it did throughout my stories!)

  1. I am so sorry to hear how sad that made you. I am afraid I would have just left after the first trip in and donated the rest to a church or something. I don’t do well under pressure!
