Blog 18 Junior and Senior Years

(Welcome Back)

I need to start this blog off by making it clear that my sister, Anna, was not a bad mother and just ditched Anthony on me. I am very proud of her for trying so hard, with no help from my parents, to make a life for her and Anthony. She was suppose to graduate in 1975, but because she got pregnant, the school made her leave. To my surprise, she made the decision to finish high school. Suddenly, she became a senior my junior year. I was amazed because she could have taken a GED but she chose to graduate.

Anna moved back home, so it made it easier to care for Anthony, She got jobs to take care  of them and she paid a woman to care for Anthony until one of us could get him. She graduated in 1978. Again, I was very proud of her. But, there was a period when she dated the father of the most popular boy in my class. Little did she know, it caused a BIG deal in my class, and it created a problem between the boy and me. (Even though I had nothing to do with the situation and Anna was old enough to date his father.) But, you know kids, they embarrassed the boy and pushed him to  pick on me. Since I had known the boy since 4th grade, we were able to settle things privately. I forget why, but Anna did move out and again I tried to help with Anthony as much as possible.

(Goody-two shoes?)

In every group of friends, there is always an instigator. At school, our instigator was Jeanie. We knew that because our group was considered the Goody-two shoes. We got away with murder. But, our mayhem was usually innocent. It was great because we got away with murder. Jeanie could convince me to do anything. I will be telling you many stories about Jeanie in a moment.

We learned to manipulate the teachers. Vanessa, Betsy and I were chosen for the National Honor Society our junior year. There were only 7 Juniors selected. Always having the need to be in charge, at the end of our junior year, we voted for the Honor Society officers for our Senior year. With only 7 of us, we only needed 4 votes to win. I got with Vanessa and Betsy and we all made an agreement that we would vote me for President, Vanessa for Vice-President, and Betsy for Secretary. We only needed one more vote to solidify our plan. We talked it over and chose a student that we knew would not want an office. I made a deal with her and our plan was set. WHAT A SHOCK! GUESS WHO THE OFFICERS WERE? I take the blame, but we got away with rigging the votes.

(The summer)

I had the opportunity to be the pool manager at the Boy Scouts summer camps. I was able to do it for a month when I got a call from my sister. Mary was pregnant and Bill Fish was going to be out on a job for a few weeks and they wanted me to come to Colorado to be with Mary while Bill was busy. I agreed. When I came back home, my manager position had been replaced. Luckily, something happened at the city pool and they were in need of an assistant manager/lifeguard to finish the summer and I got the job. But, the week before coming back from Colorado, our Explorer group had won the right to go to the National Explorer Olympics for the second time. I drove to the event from Mary’s house.

(Can you get drunk on vanilla extract?)

While we were competing, we decided we wanted to party one night but none of us were old enough to buy liquor. Smart Millard knew that extracts had alcohol, so I convinced everyone to pitch in to buy them with cokes. I say to this date, DO NOT DO THAT!!!!! None of us even got a buzz, it tasted nasty, and about half of us got sick. But, on the last night of the games, we were invited to a real party and some of us went. My brother, Darrell, decided to be the bartender. My best swimming friend and I went overboard. We got so drunk! At one point, I was talking to my friend, who was passed out and suddenly he threw up all over me. To sober us up, Darrell and others tried walking us around the dormitory, but no results.

They got us back to our room and hoped we would sleep it off before my mom and the other adults found out. We were wasted! We were so sick, that they had to call the doctor in to look at us. He gave us suppositories to help with the nausea. My friend put the wrapped pill in his mouth and was trying to eat it. He started yelling, “Give me a crash helmet. I going to hell for all my sins!” Of course, my mom had to call Mary and Bill to come from Denver to pick me up. They put me in my car to wait for them to come. The rest had to get to the airport to catch their flight. However, my friend was still too drunk when it was time to leave and the airport would not let him fly. So, my mom and he had to stay at the airport until they were given permission to fly. That was the worst drunk I have ever had and, though I became a drinker, I never let myself get that far again! It seemed liked forever until my sister and brother got there to take me home. They put me to bed and I slept a full day.

(I promise Blog 19 will finish school. Even if I go over 1000 words. it will cover The rest of my senior year and the hijinks of Jeanie)

  1. I can’t wait for the next blog, you definitely are an entertaining writer and have lived an interesting life. I didn’t realize (or don’t remember) you were the one taking care of anthony, after i graduated, everywhere anna and i went, he was with us. He loved my car lol someday i will tell you stories about how we got anthony to behave when we went places. we were bad, very, very bad lol

    1. Tank, my time with Anthony was based on Anna’s efforts to support the two of them and her date life. I took care of him when she worked, went on dates, or just needed help. He would usually sleep with me when they moved back home and he definitely came to me when he needed things. Anna was trying her best , but she could not do it alone. I loved taking care of him and was glad that Anna could have some type of life outside of being a mom. Thanks for the response. I would love to hear your stories, as well.

  2. Thanks for taking me back to my room before the vanilla extract. i missed out on the trouble and the suppository!!!! thanks for the memory!!!

    1. Steve, you might have gotten away with that one. But when I get to my party days, you are involved and without any place to hide.
