Blog 12: (cont) 9th grade

As I stated, I felt I had to be the best in everything. I tried not to engage myself to things that did not point to me. I really loved school, anyways. I had been a lifeguard, won district champion in the 500 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke. I was named most valuable boy for my first year, and when I was home, I had this wonderful baby boy just waiting to see me. Terri and I were still spending time together outside of school going to many swim meets all over Texas and being in Explorers.
Remember the girl I wrote about braiding her hair and sticking pencils in to hold them as she walked down the hall? She was in almost all my classes in 9th grade and we actually became best friends. She introduced me to two of her friends, and the four of us became a group of know it all’s, but also, fun troublemakers. Vanessa, Jeanie, Betsy and I started a bond that has lasted past school years. Jeanie was very mischievous. I was scared of her at first. But, by 10th grade, she and the others opened me up to quit being a do-gooder. It was quite fun. The best thing about it was that we could get away with murder because, in class, we were such ANGELS!

I became close friends with Steven, Terse, Kristi, Jeff, Steve, Joyce, Terry, of course, Terri and many others that shared the same likes as me. I have many stories to tell about everyone of these people. All great, and all life-long. We would be stuck in 9th and 10th grade for quite some time if I told them all. Terri and I attended the National Explorer Congress in Washington, DC, both our 9th and 10th grades to elect our National Officers. What a great and fun experience. At free-times, we were both looking to make new friends from around the country, but we got together at parties, and election time. I did the best I could to be “good”, and to be a great role model for little Del (Anthony).
